Our Fight with Roger Miret from Agnostic Front

Happy New Year everybody! This is the first pod of 2019 and it's a doozy, folks. I tell the tale of the great scarfcapade of 2018 and then I get to my interview with Roger Miret.

For those that don't know, Roger Miret was a Cuban immigrant who came to America at the age of four in 1968 and became a pioneer of the New York Hardcore scene in the 80s. He joined seminal NYHC group Agnostic Front in 1983 and has influenced and changed people's attitudes, lives, and perceptions thru his music worldwide.

The music of Agnostic Front and NYHC in general oozes brutality and violence, but beneath that is a layer of humanity and brotherhood that's often overlooked. Hearing Roger speak to that in this conversation, and seeing it play out in the documentary "Godfathers of Hardcore" as well as in his book "My Riot" is extremely fascinating. "My Riot" is a true immigrant story of survival in a land of desperation and despair and ultimately, triumphantly, coming out on top.

Enjoy this conversation I have with a dude that's sweet as hell who's lived a life that's influenced countless others and who's been humble and true to himself throughout it all.

Today we talked about his life growing up in the Baruch Projects on the Lower East Side, how neighborhood violence impacted his upbringing and outlook, and how snakes slithered their way into his life to save him from it all.

It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows—without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. And I got Scott Crawford on the horn to talk to me about it all.

Today I interview the great Mike Park - founder of Asian Man Records, vocalist/sax player in Skankin' Pickle. Side projects are The Chinkees & Bruce Lee Band (B. Lee Band), and his current musical incarnation is an acoustic venture under his name, Mike Park. ALSO! He organizes charity tours and events via his non-profit The Plea for Peace Foundation. His label will sign anyone that's anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-prejudice and is still run, to this day, out of his parents garage in California with help only from his parents and friends. Holy shit this guy, his music, message, and the bands his label put out helped me out a lot and it was so cool talkin' to him. He's gotta lotta wisdom & ya'll are gonna enjoy listenin' to it.

EDIT: I misspoke during the pod - Asian Man Records was started in 1996. I know I said 1988, but in actuality, it was 1989 when Mike started a label called Dill Records, with Asian Man starting in his parents garage in Monte Soreno, California in '96. My bad gang. Thanks for understanding.
